PAST PRESIDENTS COMMITTEE

This special committee was convened in celebration of those who have led our Club during our first century. The Past Presidents came together as a group and enthusiastically took on the mandate of seeking out and recommending a project that reflected the goals of The Rotary Club of Toronto within our local community. Drawing upon their collective past experience, they cast their nets far and wide, explored many excellent and worthy projects and after thorough and intensive investigations and deliberations the Past Presidents have recommended a project which reflects the proud history of our Club within the community.

CENTENNIAL PROJECT – THE RCT NEWCOMER CLINIC, SHERBOURNE HEALTH CENTRE

St James Town in downtown Toronto is the most densely populated area in Canada, and with 28,000 official residents predominantly new immigrants and new Canadians, this community suffers from serious overcrowding, poverty, poor health and inadequate access to and knowledge of health services. At present there is only one family doctor servicing the health care needs of this marginalized community.

The Rotary Club of Toronto in partnership with the Sherbourne Health Centre will be funding the establishment, building and furnishing of two clinic rooms to be served by doctors within the community at the St James Town Community Centre at 200 Wellesley Street. This clinic will open up access to health care for this special needs area of Toronto. This partnership with Sherbourne Health Centre in establishing the Rotary Club of Toronto Newcomer Clinic is consistent with the highest traditions of Rotary with the Rotary Club of Toronto Health Bus(es), The Rotary Club of Toronto Transition Centre at St Michael’s Hospital and Seaton House Infirmary, all landmark signature projects in Rotary’s history in downtown Toronto.

Our $100K project covers all aspects of the clinic build and furnishings.
