Karl Subban, author, educator, inspirational speaker, dad and hockey dad.

Karl is a school principal and father of five children, including three sons, drafted and signed by NHL teams.  His two eldest daughters are teachers in the TDSB. 

Karl has learned to inspire people through coaching, parenting, teaching and leading over his thirty-three years working in schools.

“Your greatest gift is your potential,” he often says, “and your greatest gift to the world is the development and sharing of that potential.”

Karl’s memoir, How We Did It, written with Scott Colby, was an immediate bestseller. His debut picture book, Skates In A Box, will be published by Harper Collins Canada.

The event was Miinawaa – Eyiizh/ And – Both, a fundraiser hosted jointly by the Rotary Club of Toronto and the Indigenous Spirit Fund (ISF). Proceeds of the evening were shared by the Rotary Philanthropic Fund and the ISF’s camps program.

 

It was a grand reunion for many members, who had not seen each other in person for more than two years. One member commented that she joined the club during COVID and this was the first time she’d actually met any Rotarians.

 

As the guests mingled they enjoyed Canadian wines and a selection of delicious Indigenous-themed hors d’oeuvres catered by en Ville.

 

Highlight of the evening was a program emceed by ISF director Kenn Richard and opened by Tasunke Sugar and his drumming group. Past President John Fortney gave greetings from our Club and talked about our work with the Indigenous community over the years. Chief of the Mississaugas of the Credit Stacey Laforme spoke about reconciliation and seeking common ground, and delighted his audience with a recitation of his poetry.

 

As the program came to a close, former ISF camper, Willow Branco, talked lyrically of how the camp experience had transformed her life.

 

The point of the whole evening, of course, was to raise donations for the two funds and the silent auction tables attracted bids for a wide selection of items including a basket of French wines, a weekend at a cottage at Sauble Beach, a day of events at Six Nations of the Grand River and a painting by Anishinaabe artist Joseph Sagaj.

 

As people made their way out the door with their purchased items, all agreed it had been a successful and memorable evening.

You will hear from our Club President, Jayson Phelps, as well as other Rotarians who will provide you with an overview of what their committees do and how to get involved. There will also be numerous RCT members present, who will be available for any questions, (Ask Me Anything) you may have regarding Rotary and our club.

 

We are very excited at the prospect of having you and your fellow Rotarians meeting our newest members and prospects in person and looking forward to you sharing the many benefits of being a member of the Rotary Club of Toronto.
