Transforming communities and promoting harm reduction initiatives that centre on sex worker safety and wellbeing
Jamie Magnusson is an associate professor of adult education and community development. Their research looks at how urban poverty is organized, and the ways in which urban communities – in particular queer and trans Black, Indigenous and racialized women – can reclaim urban spaces from processes such as gentrification. Magnusson is also an activist with experience organizing among queer and trans communities and sex workers.
Peter Mansbridge
Over 125 people were at our virtual meeting on January 14 where speaker Peter Mansbridge summed up his 50 year career in broadcasting. It was a great meeting but we were not able to record it.
The meeting also included a multi-faith segment of 'Do onto Others..', our latest Video Moment on 2022 Resolutions and the introduction of two new members.

The Club and Foundation work together to have an impact. Here is a recent example from one of the organizations…
In June 2017 an Agreement was signed between SPRINT Senior Care, as the lead agency of the Toronto Ride program, and the Rotary Club of Toronto Charitable Foundation to provide funding for the purchase of vehicles to be used by Toronto Ride partner agencies for transporting seniors and disabled adults to their appointments. Over the course of the last 5 years a total of $601,000 was awarded to Toronto Ride by the Rotary Club of Toronto, as follows:
A total of 16 vehicles were purchased:
1 wheelchair accessible van
11 vans
4 sedans
1 x 10-seater wheelchair accessible bus
Welcome New Member David Daniels
David Daniels was born in New York City and has lived in Boston, Israel, and San Francisco before moving to Toronto this past August. He went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) earning a Bachelors and a Masters in Management, with an emphasis on computing. David’s work has always been a blend of management and technology: he ran a strategic technologies group at MetLife Insurance; did management consulting with a big international firm; and founded a start-up during the “dot com” boom in Silicon Valley.
David now runs a company called T324, which does website development and digital marketing. The company is based in San Francisco and he is in the process of opening an office in Toronto.
David’s partner is Karen Chapple. She is the new Director of the new School of Cities at the University of Toronto, which is why they moved here. He has three daughters: one who lives in Seattle; one who lives in Berkeley, CA; and the youngest is 14 attending the Rosedale Heights School of the Arts in Toronto.
David enjoys running and has been having a great time exploring the ravines in the snow. He plays piano -- with a little arm twisting he can be persuaded to do so at parties. And he loves gadgets, particularly those that connect to the internet.
David’s first exposure to Rotary was in 1988. He went on a Group Study Exchange for six weeks to the Philippines. It was a life changing experience, and he also gained quite a bit of exposure to Rotary in the process. He looks forward to joining the Rotary Club of Toronto in order to contribute to the community that is now his home, and hopefully make some new friends along the way.
A second new member, Probir Chatterjee
Probir is a Mechanical Engineer, a Certified Accountant and has an MBA in (Finance) and comes to us with a wealth of experience having served in top corporate positions – as CFO, CEA et al.
Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors of two international companies.
A service-oriented person, he has been on the Board of Charities as well as on the Board of Mississauga Senior’s Council – a service group. An active Rotarian, in Mississauga West Club, he served as the Club Secretary for a year and as Director International Projects, successfully completed 2 Global Grant Projects, along with other smaller projects.
His wife Chandra was a Special Needs & Computer Teacher (now retired), his daughter is a Barrister working for the Crown and his son is the Global Business Development Director in the Pharma / Virology field. His love life now is totally consumed by his two granddaughters.

The Fellowship side of the Events Committee is at it again...

You heard about the three-day Global Whisky Tour. Day One, we travelled through all the regions of Scotland. Day Two, we went further afield from Iceland to Ireland, India to Japan. Day Three, we feature an Olympic showdown between Canada and the USA.
The best part? Participants did this all from the comfort of their homes.
Well it seems we have a thirsty lot in our Club, so are jumping into the spirit of things and taking a sail largely around the Caribbean and sampling RUMS. Everyone has their favourite rum - now's the time to explore them in a bit more detail. These aren't mixers - these are for sipping.
Friendly RCT volunteers will delivery 60ml samples of around 8-10 different rums to your door. Then we gather on Zoom to open, sample, and discuss.
Date is tbc, but likely a Saturday afternoon in March or April, possibly early May.
