Ellin Bessner is a Canadian journalist based in Toronto. She is the author of a new book about Canada’s Jewish servicemen and women who fought in the Second World War.
Ellin was born in Montreal and graduated with a degree in journalism and political science from Carleton University. Her career as a journalist took her around Canada and around the world, working for CTV News and CBC News, and also stringing for the Globe and Mail, The Canadian Press and other organizations. As a foreign correspondent based in Rome, Italy, during the 1990s, aside from reporting on the Vatican, the Mafia, Italian food, fashion, and opera, and of course, on Italian soccer, Ellin also covered several brutal civil wars in Africa. She’s interviewed Prince Phillip and the Dalai Lama. She was a business anchor for many years at Report on Business Television, now BNN.
Ellin has also taught hundreds of budding young journalists, in her capacity as a professor at Centennial College Journalism School in Toronto, and before that, at Seneca College and Ryerson University.
In her spare time, she plays Mahjongg, gardens, and loves the “Outlander” series. She lives in Richmond Hill, Ontario with her husband and two sons.
On Wednesday our incomparable Executive Director, Carol, celebrated her tenth anniversary with The Rotary Club of Toronto. How time flies! Carol is the centre that pulls us all together. She is knowledgeable in all things Governance, Robert’s Rules of Order, Club history and practices, members and so much more. Her strength and commitment has never been tested more than it has this year with COVID.
Carol, on behalf of the Club I want to thank you for everything you do and personally, I could not have done this without you! Thank you!

Wow! The STEAM Sisters, Sandhya and Swapna Mylabathula, really are an amazing pair. Identical twins, they have pursued their passions of hockey and medical concerns for years. Their chief focus has been on the causes and effects of concussions, not just in sports.
They discussed how concussions happen and not just from direct blows to the head. Helmets do not prevent concussions but can protect the skull. They gave the five steps needed to be followed to recover: - start early, move slowly with limited movement - go to moderate activity then activity to increase heart rate before returning to full activity.
15%-20% will have persistent effects including mental health needs.
They have been actively involved in Ontario's Awareness, Prevention, Identification, Management and Training legislation as well as Rowan's Law - named after a young woman who died from rugby-related concussions. They work with sports organizations and school boards to build awareness.
All of this is done while they are both full-time students in doctoral programs at University of Toronto. Take the time to see their presentation online. They are a dynamic duo.

It is with great pleasure that we say welcome to Mark Chipman from the Rotary Club of Whitby-Sunrise as our new District Governor for the Rotary year 2020-21. District Governor Mark Chipman has been a passionate and engaged Rotarian since 2006 with a wide range of experience at both the Club and District levels. With Whitby Sunrise he served as Club President in 2012, and as Director on several committees including Fundraising and the Whitby Ribfest. He feels privileged to have participated in humanitarian service for club projects in Laos, Thailand and Dominican Republic.
