Robert Ward is a writer and traveller with a passion for pilgrimages. He is the author of Virgin Trails, an agnostic’s guide to the legends and worship of the Virgin Mary; and All the Good Pilgrims, a lighthearted account of his many walks on the Camino de Santiago pilgrim road.
Robert’s freelance travel articles have appeared in major newspapers including The Globe and Mail, The LA Times and The Chicago Tribune. His short stories and essays have been featured in Queen’s Quarterly and other literary journals. He graduated with a major in Christianity and Culture from the University of Toronto (as perhaps the only atheist ever to win the St. Michael’s College gold medal in Religious Studies), and taught English for several years in Japan.
Robert was born and lives in Toronto. His most recent foray on the Camino de Santiago came last fall, on the Caminho Portugues.
At this point we are planning on all meetings being Hybrid until the end of June. Join us in person or online.
Welcome Back Gloria Lee
As we start to move out of Covid (we hope) the executive has been reaching out to members who had left us. Gloria is the first to return but we do expect more.
At our "ASK ME ANYTHING" meeting on March 31st there were several past members in attendance that are seriously considering a return. It was a great evening with many prospective members as well. Watch for more coming up.
Rebeccah Love's Video Event
Peter Love’s daughter, Rebeccah Love, gave a talk at one of the Club’s Friday lunches last December, on the topic of mental health and the community, and showed a portion of her latest film, “Eve Parade”, to the Rotarians and guests in attendance.
The full screening event is now going ahead on April 16, at the Paradise Theatre (1006 Bloor St W). Rebeccah is hoping to have as many members of the Club as possible come. The films deal with various mental health issues in a compassionate and dramatic way. The evening will also feature a talk by Vicky Stergiopoulos, Physician-in-Chief at CAMH.

Making a direct impact with Ukraine Aid – We have matched $51,000.
ShelterBox is looking at providing both shelter within Ukraine for people who have been displaced and aid packages with essentials like blankets, solar lights, sleeping mats and so on, for refugees who make it out of the country. Our Club's President and Our Charitable Foundation's President under joint authority have approved $15,000 towards this aid via ShelterBox.
Cost: $51.98/person($46+Tax) not including food and drinks ordered (BATL serves drinks and we are ordering takeout from Cherry Street BBQ around the corner).
Registration and payment by e-transfer must be completed by April 15 to attend.
As with our luncheons we require a two-dose certificate on file with Carol in order to attend. Furthermore, the venue requires agreement with their Code of Conduct which includes a requirement for closed-toe shoes and conducting yourself in a safe and controlled fashion.
This may be your best time ever to really get to know your fellow Rotarians while making a difference for inner-city children.
Best to come for the weekend but if you only have one day come for breakfast on Saturday and stay for dinner.

Our District Conference is back live!
Be a Driver for Change
with District Governor Ron Dick
The upcoming District Conference is from May 13 to 15 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Oshawa. Our Club will be hosting a hospitality suite at the conference. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet Rotarians from our 54 clubs and exchange experiences. The organizers have created a fabulous program for expanding our knowledge and also entertainment.
This past month The International Service Committee has donated funds through the Rotary Club of Bowmanville to the Rotary Club of Sonde, Uganda for the Burkerere Hospital Maternity Ward.
These funds along with more from six other clubs will be purchasing equipment to make birthing safer for so many clients of the hospital.
All you have to do is go to Linktr.ee/RotaryToronto and you will be connected to our club’s landing page. You can buy a ticket in $5, $10 or $20 increments. The winners are posted weekly on the website and depending on your tickets and the card you choose you may win the weekly draw prize or even the jackpot.
Our club receives $0.85 for every $5 purchase, $2.95 for every $10 purchase and $7.15 for every $20 purchase.
With Covid still affecting us this is one way to help our club.
