Fri Feb 21st - Lunch at The National Club

Keynote: Terry Fallis
Award-Winning Author
An Unorthodox Journey to the Published Land

Terry Fallis began his journey as an engineering graduate from McMaster University before taking an unconventional path into the literary world. Despite having no prior experience in publishing, he was determined to share his work and self-published his first novel after facing rejection from traditional publishers. He never imagined that his book would gain recognition, but to his surprise, he was shortlisted for the prestigious Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour. Even more astonishing, Terry went on to win the award twice, a feat that left him completely floored. His journey stands as a powerful testament to persistence, resilience, and the refusal to give up despite obstacles.

During his talk, Terry emphasized the importance of perseverance, encouraging aspiring writers and dreamers to push forward, no matter how many setbacks they face. He seamlessly wove humor into his speech, engaging the audience with his wit and charm. His ability to make people laugh while delivering an inspiring message made his talk both entertaining and motivational. By the end, the impact of his words was evident, leaving the audience uplifted and energized.

As Dauna noted at the conclusion of the event, “I don’t think I’ve heard so much laughter from the audience at a Rotary event before.” Terry’s ability to blend humor with a message of determination made his talk truly memorable. His story serves as a reminder that success often follows persistence, and sometimes, the most unexpected journeys lead to the greatest achievements.

Sewing Project - April 5th
In many rural areas, including Consuelo in the Dominican Republic, girls face a monthly challenge: lack of access to menstrual hygiene products. This affects their health, well-being, and causes them to miss at least five days of school each month, limiting their education and future opportunities.

On Saturday, April 5th, 2025, join us for the Sanitary Pad Sewing Project as we assemble 250 reusable menstruation kits for girls in the Dominican Republic. Each kit includes flannel liners, shields, underwear, and hygiene supplies. These kits will help girls continue their education with dignity and confidence.
No sewing experience? No problem! Whether you’re cutting fabric, sewing, or assembling kits, every helping hand makes a difference. Together, let’s stitch a path to education and empowerment.

WANTED: Charities who need us.

The Community Outreach Committee is on the lookout for charities working within the downtown Toronto area that we haven't crossed paths with who could benefit from our support. If you know of a registered charity that supports our local Toronto community and could use a helping hand, please contact Community Outreach Committee Co-Chair Bert Steenburgh (bert@stonefortress.ca) with the charity's name and any other intel you have. We will take it from there and follow-up on the lead.

Be on the lookout: If you see a social media post in the months ahead regarding community outreach, we would appreciate your support in re-posting/sharing with your social media networks to spread the word.

The fine print: In the past, we have supported food banks, seniors' centres, shelters for those experiencing homelessness, and music programs for children, among many others. Funding requests for travel, conferences, advocacy, and large capital campaigns are generally not eligible.
