RIBFEST 2014-by Shannon Lundquist
Another Canada Day and another scorching hot Ribfest! With over 100,000 attendees to the 15th Annual Toronto Ribfest, anticipated net proceeds to Rotary charities will total over $60,000. All told, 97 boisterous volunteer Rotarians from Toronto and Sunrise, as well as Rotaractors from UofT and Toronto, contributed more than 665 hours to greeting at the gate. Action was non-stop and there was never a dull moment.
Ribfest brings out the heat (and humidity) for both tasty treats and those in search of shelter! Our own celebrity judges: Richard (chicken), Steve (pulled pork) and Pat (ribs) can attest to the delicious quality and variety. Food Network, here they come!
Canada Day was by far the hottest, the busiest and the most political! Volunteers started before 11 and went through to 10pm, only closing up shop once the sun went down and there was no ability to count out change! The line at some points was over a block long, but teams kept entrants moving with a smile and a shout out for two dollars to Rotary. Those of us volunteering at the East Gate greeted three Toronto mayoral candidates, all of whom donated to the cause!
All in all, it was another successful and collaborative event. Not only are we able to raise funds for our worthy charities, but Ribfest serves as an excellent forum to raise awareness and interest about Rotary and the service in the community. And, its fun!
