Biography Kristin Light is a marketing strategist, vintage dance specialist, and award-winning speaker. Her multi-decade eclectic career spans both the boardroom and the ballroom. Co-founder of Refvik & Light Productions, her boldly simplistic marketing strategy launched the event company from literal rubble to multi-six figure revenue in its first full year. However, as a vivacious showgirl and successful entrepreneur, Kristin was perhaps the last person you’d expect to be suffering from a diagnosed mental illness. Following a brush with suicide that left her confined to a psychiatric ward, Kristin now speaks out to provide real insight and practical strategies that demystify the facts surrounding mood disorders and mental illness using inspirational (and often hilarious) stories from her own personal and professional life. |

Dan Frankian, FalconerGuest Speaker: Falconer, Dan Frankian Friday, August 27, 2021 - Time: 12:00 Noon to 1:15 PM Rotary Virtual Meeting via TEAMS! Topic: Falconry - Playing with Rotary Toronto Execs! Host: Past President Geoffrey Johnson Rotarian and Guests: RSVP to office@rotarytoronto.com if using TEAMS to be admitted to the meeting. SCROLL DOWN TO SEE MORE UPCOMING OR PREVIOUS SPEAKER Views and Opinions Expressed Disclaimer: The views and opinions are those expressed by the Speaker and do not necessarily reflect the official views or opinions, policy or position of The Rotary Club of Toronto or its Members. Biography Armenian descent, Dan immigrated to Canada with his family when he was 11 years old. Upon graduating from high school, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and trained as a vehicle technician and a weapons expert. Dan saw his first bird of prey as a child when hunting with his father. His interest was sparked when he watched one of the hunters using an owl to hunt. As a young man in the Canadian Armed Forces, a foreign dignitary who was a falconer befriended him; thus began his endeavor into the world of birds of prey. He spent time with a falconry expert in Cyprus while on leave from the Canadian Armed Forces. This gentleman was a Master Falconer who taught Dan the knowledge required to train and take care of birds of prey, particularly eagles. After leaving the Armed Forces as a sniper, Dan returned home to Toronto and enrolled at George Brown College, obtaining a Certificate in Jewelry Arts. He also acquired diplomas as a Fellow of the Canadian Gemological Association and its US counterpart, the Gemological Institute of America. He joined the family business (his father was a 3rd generation jeweler), working in partnership with his father and managing their store in the Yorkville area of Toronto. However, his interest in falconry never diminished and he founded his bird control business in 1989. Hawkeye Bird and Animal Control quickly grew from a one-man operation using one hawk and expanded to a business with 14 staff members and more than a dozen birds of prey. There are now several offices in Canada. Dan Frankian has worked nationally, as well as internationally, for various government agencies and large corporations. His international portfolio includes projects in the Galapagos Islands, Thailand and the United States. Dan Frankian’s birds of prey and dogs have appeared in and have opened for several live shows and TV shows and documentaries, as well as full feature movies such as Harry Potter. Dan Frankian continues to speak at events and conferences worldwide, discussing such issues as bird and animal control, bird removal, bird strikes and abatement. As an expert outdoorsman, hunter and trapper, he is concerned with environmental issues and renewable natural resources. Dan Frankian holds a Canadian commercial falconry license, a Master Falconry Permit in the State of Florida, an Ontario Fur Managers license for commercial fur and trapping nuisance wildlife as well as numerous firearms licenses, Advanced Wildlife Control Operator, Exterminator License, is Bats Standard Certified, and a Certified Urban Marksman. Dan is the ONLY CWCP (Certified Wildlife Control Professional) IN CANADA plus holding CWCP certification in the US. He is also a graduate of the Embry-Riddle Wildlife Hazard airport course. In addition, Dan Frankian runs a rehabilitation clinic for injured wild birds of prey out of his home. Dan is a staunch supporter for the preservation of birds of prey, as they continue to be a key barometer of a healthy natural environment. |

Wow! What a year! From John Fortney The President’s year actually starts to get intense in the months leading up to it. This past Rotary year was dramatically intensified due to Covid-19. You have already heard of the 30/40 hours a week on Googlemeets/Zoom plus the countless phone calls. I actually had to have a Virtual doctor’s appointment as all the added time on the computer had strained my neck and shoulders. Thanks to some temporary meds and adjustments to the positioning of my computer that all got worked out. At the same time as my year was ramping up, my Father, who, like most sons, I loved very much, admired greatly and genuinely enjoyed being around was ill. Dad was palliative for those initial months and passed away just as we hit Changeover. Possibly the most emotional Presidential takeover in RCT history. It was a lot, but I made it through. The outpouring of support and love from members gave me strength. My Inaugural Speech is still our most attended meeting with over 1200 views. It was a gift that I was able to be there for Dad and my Wonderful Step-mom and this new virtual world allowed this. Thus, began The Fortney Era at The Rotary Club of Toronto! The Covid Grants from the $300,000 our Foundation put up continued into my year as we tried to help frontline charities caught in a lurch because of new Pandemic protocols. It soon became obvious that Virtual was going to be our world for most of the year, most likely the whole year. It is really hard to describe what it is like to finally become President and not be with anyone from the club the entire time. Periodically I got messages or phone calls of support that were very appreciated; in the last few weeks there have been many, thank you. They meant so much! The same goes for last Tuesday’s farewell event - it gave me a much needed reaction to my year. I really had no idea. Probably the most significant realization of this unprecedented year was the absolute resilience, resourcefulness and strength of our club. Early on with Covid two significant indicators of this for me were the rapid and generous response from our Club’s Foundation and the swift action of our Fellowship Committee. We had immediate and substantial reaction for both Community needs and for our Rotary Family’s needs. |

Biography Bill Redelmeier grew up on a dairy farm in Richmond Hill. When Bill and his wife started Southbrook Farms in the early 1980’s, making wine seemed like a natural evolution for their farm to table philosophy. When Southbrook moved to Niagara in 2005, Bill made the step up to certified organic and biodynamic farming and fulfilled a focus on sustainability. The Niagara winery is an example of what is possible in sustainability. The retail pavilion was designed by Jack Diamond and is LEED certified. With its solar panel program, Southbrook had the first commercial net metering project in Niagara, reducing their power consumption by 80%. Bill joined Rotary in the 80’s and served as the president of the Richmond Hill club in 1989. Bill and Marilyn especially enjoyed ‘making up’ around the world: over the years in the UK, France, India, Nepal, Australia and New Zealand. Over the years Bill has served on the board the Yellow Brick House, the Wine Council of Ontario, the Vintners Quality Alliance and the Organic Council of Ontario. Bill’s family set the example for good works which he continues to this day. Through Southbrook, fundraising campaigns have raised close to $20K for organizations such as the David Suzuki Foundation, Safe Water Project, Yellow Brick House, Mackenzie Health and the Royal Ontario Museum. |

Rotary Scholarship Meeting - Keynote Speaker Amna MajeedKeynote Speaker Amna Majeed - 2016 Scholarship Winner Guest Speakers: John Chen - 2014 Scholarship Winner and Lorenzo Penate - 2017 Scholarship Winner Friday September 18, 2020 Rotary Virtual Meeting via Google Meet Topic: Scholarship Recipient Update Host: Chair Pauline Lyons and The Scholarship Committee SCROLL DOWN TO SEE MORE UPCOMING OR PREVIOUS SPEAKERS Biography Keynote Speaker Amna Majeed – 2016 Scholarship Winner Amna Majeed graduated from the Life Sciences Program at the University of Toronto and has completed her first two weeks in medical school. She is finding it very challenging and is pleased to share her journey with the Rotary Club of Toronto. It is due to the Rotary Club of Toronto’s scholarship that she has been able to be a part of numerous university activities. She worked with the Health and Human Rights Committee to promote mental health and with Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) to advocate for inequalities within the STEM fields. Last year, She even had the opportunity to be the conference chair for WISE, through which we hosted a conference for over 600 delegates around North America to come together and discuss new research topics in STEM, and issues such as confidence and imposter syndrome in the workplace. Last year, she became the UofT Rotaract Co-President. They have hosted biweekly discussions on mental health and wellness, and fundraisers for organizations such as Plan Canada. She recently attended the UofT Rotaract meeting with the next year’s executive team. Indeed, none of this would have been possible without Rotary’s constant assistance. These clubs have not only allowed her to internalize the Rotary motto of Service above self, but have taught her the importance of joining clubs and organizations within university – allowing you to give back to your university and local community.
